A Little Bit about Domain Names

What are domain names, and how do you get one? The aritilce below discusses what domain names are, how they work, and why snatching one up now might be a good idea.

Most people easily confuse a domain name with a website. MSN.com is a domain name whereas, MSN is a web portal that uses the MSN.com domain name. A domain name may be defined as a unique name that identifies a website. In more complex terms, a domain name is the text equivalent of the Internet protocol number that is assigned to each and every computer that is hooked up to the Internet. According to the online glossary at www.simplenet.com, a domain name must be unique and users access websites using specific domain names. Who assigns these domain names? Well, most domain names are assigned by the ICANN or the Internet Corporation for Assigned names and numbers. This is a private, not for profit organization that oversees the registrations of domain names on the Internet to ensure that some basic standards are complied with. The ICANN is primarily responsible for the .com, .org and .net domain names. With over a billion web sites on the Internet, it is only sensible that such an organization exists.

Country specific domain names like .us, .uk, .ca and scores of others also exist. The one country that probably benefited from the granting of country-specific domain names was Tuvalu (.tv). Being a domain name that most broadcasting corporations would be sure to want, the .tv domain names began to fetch a good deal of interest and money and the government of Tuvalu reaped the benefits. Some of the other domain names that are soon becoming popular are .biz, .us, .info and .biz. Scores of others exist and choosing the right domain name for your business or personal use is becoming an art by itself. A directory of accredited registrars of domain names can be accessed from the ICANN website at www.internic.com/alpha.html

"A domain name may be defined as a unique name that identifies a website. In more complex terms, a domain name is the text equivalent of the Internet protocol number that is assigned to each and every computer that is hooked up to the Internet."

But getting a good domain name is no longer an easy task. The heady dot com days ensured that ALL the words in a standard dictionary have been registered, even if they are not being used. This has given rise to what has come to be known as ‘cyber squatting’. This is a domain name crime that occurs when an individual registers a popular business name or trademark and squats on it, in the hope that the original owner of the business by that name will pay a hefty sum of money to acquire that domain name. When the Internet was still new, certain enterprising youngsters in the US did just this. They registered the domain names of some of the largest corporations including SONY, the BBC and even CNN and made huge sums of money transferring these domain names to the rightful owners of the businesses. But since then, most countries of the world have established and implemented Cyber Laws to prevent such instances of cyber squatting.

Nevertheless, the quest for domain names will continue. Nowadays, it is not uncommon for entrepreneurs to first seek out the availability of a domain name before registering a business. For the domain name is more than merely a name by which your business, organization or service is known and identified on the Internet. It is a unique name that will guide business or contacts to your presence on the online world. And you sure want the best name there is!

Well, I hope this article taught you a little more about domain names. Put it to use and go ahead and start registering yours before it's taken by someone else!

Everyone seems to want their own website or page to post whatever.

Web pages are owned by countless computer goers. The big thing is, they're free. If you desire your own personal space for others to review and comment, no problem, it's available. Although these personal web pages have become so popular, there are measures to take when diving into cyberspace. We have to remember that once we post information on these public sites, our lives can be viewed by millions, and we may not always like who's viewing. How to Liven Up Your Website

In order to optimize your website and get the most traffic as possible, you need to take a series of steps to brighten up your website. Below is a great article on how to do that, and what it will do for you.

If you're paying every month for a website, are you making sure that your getting the most for your money? If you just have a series of static pages sitting in cyperspace for people to read and then move on, you're definitely not making the most of your site.

Here are some things to do. Make sure your website keeps track of how many "hits" you get each day or week. How can you assess the effectiveness methods you're using to draw people to your site if you don't know how many people are actually visiting?

Also, have some things for people to do on the site. If you're selling widgets, you could offer a free leaflet on how to use widgets, for example. You could have a video for them to watch. If you're a singer/songwrite or a voiceover actor, you could have one free audio download.

Have links within your pages to other pages on your site, but be careful of links to other sites. The goal is to keep people on your website and to ultimately have them buy your product or use your service.

Offer to send them a free e-newsletter. When signing them up, ask for a little more information than just their e-mail address, such as where they live, what they do, what their interest are. It's up to you and your needs to determine what to ask. But don't ask so much that they will be intimidated. This will give you valuable information about the people who are interested in your business. There are companies that provide e-newletter services for you, so you don't have to figure out how to program your site to do this. All you have to do is sign up with a service.

You can also sign up with companies that provide standard shopping cart services to websites so you don't have to invent the wheel on this one. Shopping carts don't necessarily keep track of who purchased what, however, so it might pay to have a programmer design your site so that you can know when someone is a repeat customer and what their needs are. You'll see an example of this kind of customization on Amazon.com.

Provide content that is of value to your visitors. And have sections that are updated at regular intervals, at least monthly. People are not going to keep coming back if they always see the same things. You want to think of your website itself providing a service to your customers.

Blogging is one way to have updated content. Blogs are very popular with internet users. Another popular thing to do is to provide industry-specific news updates. If you provide timely and useful content, people will come to rely on you as a source of useful information.

The more people rely on you for timely information and great products, the more they'll keep coming back. So go ahead and do something today to liven up your website.

So, what do you think? I hope you now see the importance of spicing up your website and making updates so customers will keep on coming back. For more information on this, see my other articles.

How to get Affordable Web Design

Looking for a professional to create a website for you? Well, here is a very helpful article on how to find and what to look for in website creation tools as well as professional services. I hope you find it useful!

Been thinking of setting up your own web presence? Well, with the range and affordability of available hosting plans, it sure is a simple task. You can opt to register a domain of your choice, go in for an inexpensive hosting plan, get your content and design organized and publish your website! Hang on there! Maybe I’m over simplifying things. Registration, hosting plans and even content are all things you can do yourself. But web design? Unless you have some sort of experience with professional web tools, you’d better not try this by yourself. Instead, go for an affordable web design.

Where exactly could you begin your search for affordable web design? For starters, you could check with your hosting service provider. Since your hosting provider provides hosting services to numerous clients, chances are she/he has a web designer on board who can give you affordable web design. If you could check this out and find it, you could land yourself an excellent and affordable web design to go with your website. As an existing customer, you could ask for and get a preferential rate.

If this doesn’t work, you could try looking for an affordable web design online. There are a number of online classifieds where you can source affordable web design. Most of the web designers who use online classifieds to advertise their services excel in providing good, affordable web design services. While they might not be well recognized professionals (in which case they wouldn’t be peddling their talent on online classifieds!), they often are talented youngsters who can give you affordable web designs at a fraction of the cost that a full-fledged agency would charge you. There is one problem though. You need to know exactly what you want and you also need to ensure that your affordable web designer is affordable because of the right reasons. Else you might end up hiring someone who is affordable, but useless or worse still someone who takes the advance you offer them and disappears!

Another source for affordable web design could be the freelancer websites specializing in web design. Most web designers who work on a freelance basis tend to be affordable. And if you are lucky enough to source out a talented web designer, you could not only get affordable web design but excellent design too. Additionally, most freelancer websites have a ratings system for service providers and buyers. Which means that you and the web designer providing you with the affordable web design can rest assured that the service will be delivered on time and paid for. Which makes all the parties concerned happy! Most freelancer sites also adopt an escrow model of payment to ensure compliance by buyers and service providers. This way, the risk that your web designer will vanish after seeking an advance is minimal. You stand to get an affordable web design with in-built peace of mind! You can get your affordable web design by adopting any of these ways and be well on your way to setting up your own website!

Congratulations! You are well on your way to making your own website. The first step of any business is planning and getting information. I hope this article facilitated that effort. Be sure to check out my other articles as well, as they will help you in your quest!
